The PANDEM-2 project in partnership with The Centre for One Health and The Ryan Institute at the National University of Ireland, Galway recently hosted an online webinar event to discuss the link between pandemics and climate change. An expert panel discussed some of the interrelations of Pandemics and Climate Change and what can be done to slow their impacts.
Speakers included:
- Professor Máire Connolly, Professor of Global Health & Development and PANDEM-2 project coordinator, The Ryan Institute, NUIG.
- Dr. Liam Morrison, research fellow, The Ryan Institute, NUIG.
- Mr. Stephen Treacy, Senior Scientific Manager, Environmental Protection Agency.
With the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, a unified European response to pandemic preparedness has never been more important. Climate change has had a direct impact on the risk of disease emergence and importation of vector-borne diseases. For that reason, it’s extremely valuable to future responders and the public that we hold conversations on the links between both crises, particularly those underlying such as increased farming levels, deforestation and global warming. By sharing information on the potential threats, we can help our core pandemic managers be even more prepared for when the next pandemic hits while reducing the risk of its emergence.
PANDEM-2 is part of the European Union’s Climate Pact. The European Climate Pact is an EU-wide movement of people, communities and organisations participating in climate action to build a more sustainable Europe for all. Launched by the European Commission, the Climate Pact is part of the European Green Deal and is helping the EU to meet its goal to be the first climate-neutral continent in the world by 2050.
