Welcome to Issue 2 of the PANDEM-2 Newsletter!

We’re delighted to issue our second newsletter which outlines what has been happening in the PANDEM-2 project in the first six months of the project as well as news from the pandemic management sector.

PANDEM-2 is a H2020 EU-funded project that aims to develop new solutions for efficient, EU-wide pandemic management. The goal of PANDEM-2 is to prepare Europe for future pandemics through innovations in training and to build cross-border response capacity between EU member states.

WHO Hub for Pandemic & Epidemic Intelligence

The WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence was officially inaugurated on the 1st September 2021 by H.E. German Federal Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel and Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, World Health Organization Director-General in Berlin. This is an excellent initiative that will address pandemic and epidemic risks by strengthening intelligence and aiming for better data, better analytics, and better decisions. Congratulations and well done to all involved including project partners, RKI.

Spotlight Series

PANDEM-2 with The Ryan Institute and Centre for One Health, NUI Galway will host a free-to-attend webinar on the connections between pandemics and climate change on Wednesday 29th September at 2pm (CET) / 1pm (IST). Kickoff Meeting

On February 3rd and 4th, the PANDEM-2 project officially kicked off. The Kick Off meeting was held remotely due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The meeting involved an introduction from all partners presenting their PANDEM-2 team, their institutes capabilities, and roles within the project. read more >>

User Requirements Workshops

PANDEM-2 kicked off in February 2021 and since then our valued end-users have been providing guidance to our experts from NUI Galway, Epiconcept and Clarisoft in order to develop an extensible dashboard for pandemic preparedness training and response execution. read more >>

Cluster Meeting

They say there is strength numbers, and this is no different when it comes to H2020 projects. Projects such like PANDEM-2 are part of the European Commission initiative to ensure that the response to ongoing and future crises are improved and that we are better prepared for future health and security crises. read more >>

How likely is another pandemic?

Prof. Máire Connolly, Global Health Expert and PANDEM-2 project coordinator spoke with Brian Hutton from Irish national newspaper, The Irish Times followed by an interview on radio show, Morning Ireland and an in-depth conversation with Conor Pope on his podcast, In the News.
The discussions provided an explainer on the strong possibility of the next pandemic and what PANDEM-2 is doing to improve our preparedness for it. Within this, its stated how PANDEM-2 will provide an EU-wide prototype system for better pandemic management by 2023. This will involve complex IT systems and innovative data analytics solutions that will allow the EU and its member states to respond quickly and effectively to the next pandemic, whenever it might arise.

Research & Publications

Fellow H2020 and PREPARE cluster project COVINFORM has recently published a white paper on ‘Inclusive communication in times of crisis‘. Based on recent findings in the lessons learned from COVID-19 and other CBRNe incidents, the research provides valuable insight on diverse crisis communications and the important need to consider vulnerability. This paper was also contributed to by the PROACTIVE project. Read More.

PANDEM-2 is one of nine EU-funded H2020 projects that focus on health or pandemic-related crisis management which came together to form the PREPARE Cluster, others include STRATEGYNOFEARPERISCOPECO-VERSATILECOVID-XPHIRIEUR3KA and STAMINA. The goal of the cluster is to explore synergies, research opportunities and collaborations that will help strengthen Europe’s preparedness for future health crises.
